Uses

Lactulose is generally used in treatment of constipation and liver disease It may also be used to treats and prevent complications of liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy).

How to use

Consume this medicine in the dosage and duration as per your doctors advise. For directions before use, please check the label. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Lactulose is advised to be taken at a fixed time, but may be taken together with food (or) without food.

How it works

Lactulose works by drawing water into the intestine through osmosis, which makes the stool soft and easier to pass.

Lactulose may interact with antibiotics, omeprazole, and Gaviscon/calcium carbonate. Senokot/senna, Fybogel/ispaghula when taken with Lactulose may result in diarrhea. No interactions have been observed when Lactulose is taken with warfarin, iron tablets, and paracetamol

Q. Does Lactulose contain lactose?
Lactulose contains lactose, galactose, and small amounts of fructose. Do not take Lactulose if you have intolerance to these sugars.
  • Avoid taking a Lactulose for more than 1 week, unless prescribed by the doctor, as it leads to dependency on the laxative action to produce a bowel movement. Together with Lactulose, fiber rich diet containing whole grain bread and cereals, bran, fruits and green leafy vegetables, is essential to maintain healthy bowel function.A Lactulose should preferably be taken at bedtime because it requires 6 to 8 hours to show impact.Notify your doctor if you are on a low-sugar diet because the Lactulose contains sugars.Take Lactulose after 2 hours from other medicines, as it may interfere with the absorption of other medicines.
