Uses

Gabapentin is generally used in treatment of neuropathic pain and seizures
Nortriptyline is generally used in treatment of the treatment of depression. It is generally used in treatment of patients intolerant of or unresponsive to alternative treatment options for depression.

How to use

How it works

Gabapentin is an antiepileptic drug. It modulates calcium channel activity of the nerve cells in the brain and decreases pain & seizures.
Nortriptyline increases the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that help in regulating the mood and treat depression.

No. Gabapentin is a prescription medication and has no role in muscle relaxation or, blood thinning

  • You have been prescribed Gabapentin for treating and preventing nerve pain caused by diabetes and shingles.It may also be used for the treatment and prevention of seizures.Its side effects are usually mild and go away by themselves. It may cause sleepiness. Don't drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you.Avoid consuming alcohol when taking Gabapentin, as it may cause excessive sleepiness or drowsiness.Inform your doctor if you develop any unusual changes in mood or behavior, new or worsening depression, or suicidal thoughts or behavior.Do not stop taking the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor as it may increase the seizure frequency.
  • The main dose should be taken at night as this drug may produce drowsiness or sleepiness.It can take 4 to 6 weeks for Nortriptyline to start working.You should continue the treatment for at least 6 months after you feel better to stop depression from coming back.If your doctor asks you to stop Nortriptyline, you should reduce the dose slowly over 4 weeks. You should not discontinue it abruptly.Avoid driving or operating machinery as it may decrease alertness.Avoid consuming alcohol when taking the Nortriptyline, as it may cause excessive drowsiness and calmness.The addiction/dependence potential of Nortriptyline is very less.It may be extremely dangerous in overdose.
