How it works

Sitagliptin is an anti-diabetic drug. It increases the release of insulin from pancreas and decreases the harmones that raise blood glucose levels to make the condition better. This reduces the pre-meal and postmeal blood sugar levels.
Q. Is Sitagliptin a statin?
Sitagliptin belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors and not a statin. This statin belongs to a class of lipid-lowering drugs.

Q. Is Sitagliptin safe?
Sitagliptin is safe if you use it as per the prescribed dose and duration. Still, you may notice some side effects such as nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, headache and low blood sugar levels ( hypoglycemia) when used along with sulphonylureas or insulin.

Q. Is Sitagliptin a blood thinner?
Sitagliptin is an antidiabetic drug and not a blood thinner. It belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors.

Q. When can I stop taking Sitagliptin ?
Do not abstain from Sitagliptin without your doctor's approval as this may cause a sudden spike in blood sugar levels. If you notice stomach pain while consuming Sitagliptin, inform your doctor and stop taking it. Adhere to your doctor's instruction strictly.

Q. Does Sitagliptin interact with other drugs?
The interaction of Sitagliptin with other medicines is very limited. Sitagliptin is an antidiabetic medicine and is less likely to cause low blood sugar levels(hypoglycemia). If you take Sitagliptin with other antidiabetic medicines, the risk of hypoglycemia increases.

Q. Does Sitagliptin have any role in the management of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)?
Sitagliptin along with metformin is used off-label for the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) as it has shown efficacy in this condition in some clinical studies. However, its use in PCOS is yet not approved. Please consult your doctor.

Q. Can I use Sitagliptin with rosuvastatin?
Sitagliptin and rosuvastatin can be used together. No drug interactions or side effects are noted.

Q. Can I take Sitagliptin with Metformin?
Sitagliptin and Metformin can be taken together. It is an add-on treatment for patients with high blood sugar levels even after consuming Metformin. The risk of getting hypoglycemia(low blood sugar levels) doesn't become high when both the drugs are taken together. Yet, a dose adjustment must be needed if the drugs are taken together.

Q. Can I take Sitagliptin with insulin?
Yes, you can take Sitagliptin with insulin. When used together can lower the insulin dose and reduces the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).

Q. Can I take Sitagliptin with Glipizide?
Sitagliptin and Glipizide can be taken together which can help to keep the blood sugar levels in control. However, both the drugs are antidiabetic and the working mechanism differs. If the dose of glipizide is not adjusted there are chances of getting hypoglycemia(low blood sugar levels).
