How it works

Empagliflozin is an anti-diabetic drug that improves the condition by eliminating excess sugar from the body through urine.
Q. Can I take Empagliflozin with insulin?
Yes, Empagliflozin can be used with insulin. However, it is may cause hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels) when used with insulin or sulfonylurea group of anti-diabetics. So, a regular monitoring of blood sugar is important when they are used together.

Q. Can Empagliflozin be given with metformin?
Yes, Empagliflozin can be taken with metformin. A combined use of the two medicines can significantly improve blood glucose levels and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and help in weight loss as compared to when either of the medicine is taken alone. No change in side effect profile has been reported compared to when they are used alone.

Q. Can I stop taking Empagliflozin at once?
Do not stop taking the Empagliflozin at once. This can lead to a sudden increase in your blood glucose levels. Always follow the advice of your doctor for the dose and duration of your treatment. Never stop taking any medicine without consulting your doctor.

Q. What effect does Empagliflozin have on patients with kidney disease?
Empagliflozin is not recommended for use in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment with eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) less than 60 mL/min/1.73m2. It may cause an increase in creatinine, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and can cause fall in blood pressure (hypotension). So inform your doctor if you have an underlying kidney disease before taking this medicine.

Q. Can I take Empagliflozin and glimepiride together?
Empagliflozin and sulfonylureas like glimepiride, gliclazide, glyburide or glibenclamide can be taken together as it can help in better control of blood sugar levels. Use of Empagliflozin can also help in lowering the risk of weight gain caused by sulfonylureas. However, the risk of low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) can increase. Consult your doctor as a dose adjustment may be needed when they are used together.

Q. Which is the difference between Empagliflozin and sitagliptin?<br>
Both Empagliflozin and sitagliptin are anti-diabetic drugs, but they work in different ways. Empagliflozin is reported to be more effective in controlling blood sugar levels and also help in weight loss while sitagliptin is weight neutral. They also differ in their side effect profile as the use of sitagliptin is associated with nausea, nasopharyngitis, and pancreatitis while Empagliflozin commonly causes urinary and genital tract infections.

Q. Is there any benefit of taking Empagliflozin and canagliflozin together?
No, it is not advisable to take Empagliflozin with canagliflozin. Both belong to the same class of anti-diabetic drugs and work in the same way. Together they may be more efficacious but there could also be an increased risk of side effects caused by them.

Q. What effect does Empagliflozin have on weight?
According to some clinical studies, Empagliflozin along with well-balanced diet and exercise works effectively in lowering blood glucose levels and weight loss in type 2 diabetes patients. Empagliflozin works by removing glucose through urine, so, calories are lost resulting in weight loss.
  • Empagliflozin is used alone or together with other diabetes medicines to control blood sugar and avoids long-term complications. It also reduces the risk of heart attack, heart failure or other cardiovascular events. You should continue to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and take your other diabetes medicines (if prescribed) along with Empagliflozin.Empagliflozin may also reduce weight and blood pressure. It may cause your body to lose too much fluid (dehydration) or you to urinate more often. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. It can cause genital fungal and/or urinary tract infections (UTIs) in both females and males, so practice good hygiene. It can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or if you delay or miss a meal. Monitor your blood sugar regularly.Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice with you in case you experience hypoglycemia symptoms such as cold sweats, cool pale skin, tremor, and anxious feeling.Inform your doctor immediately if you experience constant dizziness, joint pain, cold-like symptoms, or unexplained nausea/vomiting.
