Bacterial infections

Uses

Cefixime is generally used in treatment of the treatment of bacterial infections. It is generally used in treatment for short-term treatment of bacterial infections of urinary tract, skin and soft-tissue, ear, bone, blood, abdomen, genital and lungs (pneumonia). It is typically also used prevent infections after surgery.
Lactobacillus is generally used in treatment of diarrhoea, diarrhoea associated with antibiotics and infectious diarrhoea
Cloxacillin is generally used in treatment of the treatment of bacterial infections.

How to use

Consume this medicine in the dosage and duration as per your doctors advise. While taking Cefixime, swallow it completely without crushing, breaking or chewing it. Cefixime is advised to be taken at a fixed time, but may be taken together with food (or) without food.

How it works

Cefixime is an antibiotic. It makes the condition better by preventing the bacteria from forming a bacterial protective covering that's essential for the bacteria to survive, thereby killing them.
Lactobacillus is a probiotic. It makes the condition better by restoring the balance of good bacteria in the intestine that may get upset after antibiotic use or due to intestinal infections.
Cloxacillin is an antibiotic. It kills bacteria by preventing them from forming their own protective covering which is needed for them to survive.
Q. What is Cefixime and what is it used for?
Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic used for treating many infections, for eg: infections of the ear, throat (e.g. tonsillitis, pharyngitis), chest and lungs (e.g. bronchitis, pneumonia) and urinary tract (e.g. cystitis and kidney infections).

Q. Is Cefixime used for diarrhea?
Cefixime has not been indicated for the treatment of diarrhea. Please talk to your doctor if you have diarrhea before taking any antibiotics.

Q. Is Cefixime a cephalosporin?
Yes, Cefixime belongs to a group of antibiotics called 'cephalosporins'.

Q. Is Cefixime safe for infants?
Safety of Cefixime in children less than 6 months of age (includes premature and newborn infants) has not been established. Please consult your doctor before starting any antibiotics in children.

Q. Is Cefixime a penicillin?
Cefixime is not a penicillin. It belongs to a different class of medicines known as cephalosporin and it works in a similar way as penicillins. However, they are different antibiotics. Please consult your doctor regarding their use.

Q. Does Cefixime cause diarrhea?
Diarrhea is a common side effect of Cefixime. Diarrhea has been more commonly associated with higher doses. Stop the medicine if you have severe watery diarrhea that will not stop and you are feeling weak and have a fever. immediately consult your doctor.

Q. Does Cefixime cause constipation?
Constipation has not been reported as a side effect with Cefixime. Please consult your doctor in case you experience constipation while taking Cefixime.

Q. Does Cefixime cure chlamydia?
Cefixime is not effective against chlamydia infections, so, it is not used for its treatment. Please consult your doctor if you have been diagnosed with a chlamydial infection.

Q. Does Cefixime contain penicillin?
Cefixime is a cephalosporin which has an action similar to penicillins but it does not contain any penicillin.

Q. Does Cefixime cover pseudomonas?
No, Cefixime is not active against pseudomonas. Most strains of pseudomonas are resistant to Cefixime. Please consult your doctor if you have pseudomonas infections for the appropriate antibiotic treatment.

Q. Does Cefixime contain sulfur?
No, Cefixime does not contain sulfur. Please check the package leaflet (patient information leaflet) before using any medicine for its contents.

Q. Does Cefixime cure syphilis?
Cefixime is not active against the bacteria (Treponema pallidum) which causes syphilis. So, it is not used for the treatment of syphilis. Please consult your doctor if you have signs and symptoms of syphilis.

Q. Does Cefixime cure gonorrhea?
Cefixime can be used to treat uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae (both penicillinase and non-penicillinase producing bacteria). However, always talk to your doctor if you have any infection as it should be diagnosed properly by a doctor before the start of antibiotics. Never take antibiotics yourself.

Q. Does Cefixime treat typhoid?
Cefixime is not indicated for the treatment of typhoid by the government regulatory authorities. However, Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommend the use of Cefixime in children for uncomplicated typhoid fever. It is hence, advisable that you must take the antibiotics for typhoid fever only when it is recommended by your doctor. Do not take antibiotics yourself.

Q. Does Cefixime affect birth control?
There is no evidence of cefexime affecting birth control (contraception). However, interactions may occur and Cefixime may affect the action of birth control pills. Please consult your doctor to confirm whether you require a extra birth control measure while taking Cefixime.

Q. Can I take Cefixime with azithromycin?
No interactions have been clinically observed between Cefixime and azithromycin. However, interactions may occur. Always consult with your doctor before taking two medicines together.

Q. Can I take Cefixime and doxycycline together?
No interactions have been clinically observed between Cefixime and doxycycline. However, interactions may occur. Always consult with your doctor before taking two medicines together.

Q. Can I take Cefixime with paracetamol?
No interactions have been clinically observed between Cefixime and paracetamol. However, interactions may occur. Always consult with your doctor before taking two medicines together.

Q. Can I take Cefixime with folic acid?
Folic acid can be taken with Cefixime as no drug-drug interactions have been clinically observed between them. However, interactions may occur. Please consult your doctor before taking the two medicines together.

Q. Is Lactobacillus/Lactobacillus acidophilus vegan/ dairy free?
Some products of Lactobacillus/Lactobacillus acidophilus contain dairy products and may not be suitable for vegans. Please refer to package insert of the prescribed brand before use

Lactobacillus is a group of ‘good' bacteria that provide several health benefits. It is not among the disease causing (pathogenic) bacteria

Concomitant use of Lactobacillus with antibiotics can lower its effectiveness. Products containing Lactobacillus should be taken at least 2 hours before or after antibiotics

Q. Does Lactobacillus cause/produce gas?
Yes. Gas and bloating is a side effect of Lactobacillus. In most cases these mild side effects subside with continued use

Q. Does Lactobacillus cause UTI?
Lactobacillus is not known to cause urinary tract infections (UTI)

Q. Does Lactobacillus casei contain casein?
Lactobacillus casei is one of the species of Lactobacillus and is used a probiotic. Some products of Lactobacillus contain dairy products and may contain casein. Please refer to package insert of the prescribed brand before use

Q. Does Lactobacillus create CO2/produce alcohol?
Yes. Lactobacillus may produce carbon dioxide gas and alcohol as a part of its normal cellular process (metabolism)

Q. Does Lactobacillus acidophilus need to be refrigerated?
Dairy based Lactobacillus acidophilus products may need refrigeration. Please refer to package insert of the prescribed brand for instructions.

Q. Is Cloxacillin a penicillin/antibiotic?
Cloxacillin belongs to a class of medication called penicillin antibiotics. It does not contain penicillin but is structurally similar to it. It is is used to treat bacterial infections in the body affecting the ear, nose, throat, lungs (pneumonia), skin and skin structure infections, urinary bladder infection (cystitis), infection of the valves of the heart, bone infections, especially those caused by the resistant staphylococcus bacteria

Q. What does it treat?
It is also used to treat leprosy and lepra-reaction seen in leprosy, and to prevent infection during surgery

Q. Is Cloxacillin the same as amoxicillin?
Cloxacillin is not the same as amoxicillin, but they belong to the same class of medication called penicillin antibiotics

Q. Is Cloxacillin used for treating tonsillitis/ boils/acne/chlamydia/streptococcus infections?
Cloxacillin is not commonly used to treat tonsillitis/boils/acne/chlamydia. It may be used to treat streptococcus infections but is more commonly used for staphylococcus infections

Q. Does Cloxacillin cause weight gain or sleepiness?
These are no studies showing any relation between weight gain, sleepiness and Cloxacillin use

Q. Does it affect menstruation?
It is not known to affect menstruation

Q. Can I take Advil (ibuprofen)/ Tylenol (paracetamol) with Cloxacillin?
There are no known interactions between Cloxacillin and Advil (ibuprofen)/ Tylenol (paracetamol). But doctor's advice should be followed about taking both the medications together

Q. Is Cloxacillin safe for G6PD?
Yes, Cloxacillin can be safely used in patients who have deficiency of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)

Q. Does Cloxacillin expire?
Cloxacillin has an expiry date, beyond which it should not be consumed. Please refer to the pack or package insert for the expiry date.
  • Your doctor has prescribed Cefixime to cure your infection and improve your symptoms.Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early may make the infection to come back and harder to treat.Discontinue Cefixime and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing.Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools.Take it with food to avoid an upset stomach.Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Cefixime as it may cause increased side effects.
  • Avoid taking Lactobacillus along with steroids (medications that weaken the immune system) as they might increase the chances of getting sick.Notify your doctor if you are pregnant.Notify your doctor if you are breast-feeding.Take Lactobacillus at least 2 hours before or after antibiotics. This is because taking Lactobacillus along with the antibiotics can reduce their effectiveness.Â
  • Make sure you complete the course even if you start to feel better.It is better to take with food to avoid an upset stomach.Diarrhea may occur as a side effect but should stop when your course is complete. Inform your doctor if it doesn't stop or if you find blood in your stools.Discontinue Cloxacillin and inform your doctor immediately if you get a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or have difficulty in breathing.
