How to use

Consume this medicine in the dosage and duration as per your doctors advise. While taking Febuxostat, swallow it completely without crushing, breaking or chewing it. Febuxostat is advised to be taken at a fixed time, but may be taken together with food (or) without food.

How it works

Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It makes the condition better by decreasing blood uric acid, which is the chemical that causes gout.
Q. Can I take Febuxostat with rosuvastatin?
Rosuvastatin can be taken with Febuxostat. Rosuvastatin is used to lower bad cholesterol and Febuxostat is used to lower uric acid levels in patients with gout. Many patients of high cholesterol levels also have high uric acid levels. There are no human studies available on this interaction. However, animal research shows that when given together, Febuxostat can increase the blood levels of Rosuvastatin causing a higher risk of its side effects like muscle pain and muscle damage. So, a dose adjustment of Rosuvastatin may be needed when given along with Febuxostat.

Q. Does Febuxostat cause frequent urination?
Febuxostat has not been reported to cause frequent urination. consult your doctor if you experience any such symptom while taking this drug

Febuxostat is n't indicated for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. Hence the drug lowering triglyceride levels is lacking.

Q. How long does Febuxostat take to work?
Febuxostat may take a few days to weeks to show its effect. After oral intake, the peak plasma concentration of Febuxostat is performed between 1 to 1.5 hours. in case you can experience gout attacks during this time. Continue to use your medicine that effect of decrease gout attacks.

No, Febuxostat is n't used for the treatment of chronic kidney disease. But,it can be carefully used in patients with mild to moderate renal failure for lowering uric acid levels. Safety of the medicine in severe renal failure is not established.

Q. Can I use Febuxostat for cancer?
Febuxostat is used in this condition by reducing the uric acid levels and preventing further complications.a patients with malignant cancer when given anti-cancer drugs, undergoing a serious condition called as tumor lysis syndrome identified by phosphate and increased potassium,uric acid levels in the blood due to the killing of cancer cells and this can lead to acute kidney injury, seizures, and cardiac arrhythmia. Hence Febuxostat is not taken for the treatment of cancer.

Q. Can I take Febuxostat with allopurinol?
When taking both medicines together may not be very beneficial and can raise the risk of side effects because Both Febuxostat and allopurinol are uric acids reducing agents and act in a similar way. But, some research has been shown that Febuxostat used with allopurinol in patients with refractory gout, was quite active in providing relief. Hence, a combined use would be best decided by your treating doctor depending on your condition.

Q. Is Febuxostat useful for treating kidney stones?
Some research has been shown that high renal uric acid excretion may precipitate the formation of calcium stones in the kidney and recommend Febuxostat may have a role in the decrease of stone formation. Hence Febuxostat is not indicated in the treatment of kidney stones.

Q. Can I take Febuxostat with colchicine?
Febuxostat can be used with colchicine. It starting of the first few days, patients may undergo a rise in gout attacks due to the movement of uric acid and colchicine and painkillers are given to these patients for the relief of pain and inflammation.

Q. Can I take Febuxostat with azathioprine?
When Using both the medicines together will raise the levels of azathioprine and can cause toxicity. So Febuxostat should not be used with azathioprine.

Q. Can I take Febuxostat with antibiotics?
Febuxostat can be commonly taken safely together with antibiotics.No specific drug-drug interactions have been reported when it is generally used with most of the antibiotics. But, interactions can occur. Please consult your doctor about the right antibiotic therapy for your condition while you are also using Febuxostat.

Q. What are the contraindications to the use of Febuxostat?
In patients being treated with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, theophylline, and also in patients who develop hypersensitivity to the drug use of Febuxostat is contraindicated.
  • Your doctor has prescribed Febuxostat to reduce episodes of gout attack.Take Febuxostat at the same time every day, with or without food.Take plenty of fluids (2-3 litres) daily while on Febuxostat.Do not consume alcohol while taking Febuxostat as it may cause your gout to flare up.When you first start taking Febuxostat, you might have more gout attacks. Do not stop Febuxostat on having an acute attack of gout as that could make an attack worse.Notify your doctor if you develop a rash. This could be a sign of allergy and should go away on discontinuing Febuxostat.
