Amiloride is generally used in treatment of high blood pressure and oedema Used in treatement of oedema (fluid overload) associated with heart, liver, kidney or lung disease.
Furosemide is generally used in treatment of high blood pressure and oedema Used in treatement of oedema (fluid overload) associated with heart, liver, kidney or lung disease.

How to use

Consume this medicine in the dosage and duration as per your doctors advise. While taking Furosemide, swallow it completely without crushing, breaking or chewing it. Furosemide is advised to be taken at a fixed time, but may be taken together with food (or) without food.

Amiloride is a diuretic drug. It's a potassium-sparing diuretic that reduces the excessive electrolytes and water from the body without losing potassium thereby lowering the blood pressure and swelling by eliminiating
Furosemide is a diuretic. It removes extra water and certain electrolytes from the body by increasing the amount of urine produced. In doing so, it causes potassium loss.
Q. Is Amiloride a sulfa drug/contain sulfa?
No. Amiloride is not a sulfa drug (does not belong to sulfonamide group of medicines)

Q. Is Amiloride the same as amlodipine?
No. Amiloride and amlodipine are two different drugs and are used for treatment of different illnesses. Consult your doctor before administering any of these drugs

Q. Is Amiloride a loop diuretic/beta blocker/aldosterone antagonist/thiazide?
No. Amiloride is not a loop diuretic / a beta blocker or aldosterone antagonist. Neither does it belong to the ‘thiazide' group of medicines. It is a potassium–sparing diuretic

Q. Does Amiloride cause gout?
Increase in blood uric acid levels is known side effect of Amiloride, which can occasionally lead to gout attacks. Consult a doctor if you observe any symptoms related to gout after taking this medicine

Hair loss/acidosis is a known side effect of Amiloride

Q. How does Amiloride cause hyperkalemia/does it cause hyponatremia?
Amiloride has potassium conserving ability and hence may cause hyperkalemia. It prevents absorption and promotes the loss of sodium from the body and hence may cause hyponatremia

Q. Does Amiloride cause gynecomastia/weight gain?
Amiloride is not known to cause gynecomastia or weight gain. Please consult your doctor if you observe such symptoms after taking this medicine.

Q. How is Furosemide different from Torasemide?
Both Furosemide and Torasemide are loop diuretics and are used to treat high blood pressure and edema caused by an underlying liver, kidney or lung diseases but Furosemide is also used in the treatment of hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood). However, Torasemide has a long duration of action and is safe to use in patients with renal failure as compared to Furosemide.
  • Amiloride helps remove fluid from your body when used with other drugs.It can make you feel dizzy for the first few days. Don't drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how Amiloride affects you.It may cause the level of potassium in blood to go up. Avoid taking potassium supplements and potassium-rich foods such as banana and broccoli.Your doctor will regularly check your kidney function and the amount of potassium in your blood while you're on this drug.Notify your doctor if you experience dizziness, diarrhoea, vomiting, fast or irregular heartbeat, swelling in feet, or difficulty breathing.
  • Furosemide helps removes excess water from your body and lower blood pressure.Take it in the morning with breakfast to avoid getting up at night to urinate.May cause dizziness in the initial days of treatment.Monitor your blood pressure after starting Furosemide, and notify your doctor if it hasn't gone down.Notify your doctor if you experience dizziness, tiredness, or muscle weakness that doesn't go away.Take potassium supplements or potassium-rich diet (banana, spinach, coconut water etc) as Furosemide can decrease your potassium levels and lead to dehydration.Requires routine blood tests to monitor your kidney function.
