Yoga Chikitsa is a form of mind-body therapy that involves a combination of muscular activity and an internally directed mindful focus on awareness of the self, the breath, and energy. Some basic principles underlie the teachings and practices of yoga’s healing system.

The human body is a holistic entity comprising of various inter-related dimensions inseparable from one another, and the health or illness of any one dimension affects the other dimensions.

People and their needs are unique and therefore must be approached in a way that acknowledges this individuality and their practice must be tailored accordingly.

People and their needs are unique and therefore must be approached in a way that admits this identity and their practice has to be tailored accordingly.

Until recently, no one could say with any degree of certainty why—or even how chronic pain, disease or illness struck and then stuck. But today we have enough evidence on how non- communicable diseases occur.

Treating non-communicable disease ranging from musculoskeletal pain, cardiac issues, respiratory issues, digestive issues to infertility and cancer has become a challenge. Chemicals initially seem to help, but with continued usage, they create hordes of health hazards themselves.

Our age-old science of Yoga therapy seems to have an answer. A group of researchers at Boston University School of Medicine believe they have discovered yoga’s vital.

Within articles published in the May 2012 issue of Medical Hypotheses Journal, Chris Streeter, Ph.D., and his team studied yoga functions regulating the nervous apparatus. And how can it accomplish this? By Vagal tone that is upping –your human body’s ability to respond to stress.

 What is Yoga Chikitsa?

Yoga Chikitsa is a self-empowering scientific tool; the patient is his or her healer. Yoga Chikitsa engages the patient in the healing process by playing an active role in their journey towards health so that the healing comes from within, instead of from a foreign chemical. This way a greater sense of autonomy and well- being is achieved.

The quality and state of an individual’s mind are crucial to healing.

When the individual has positive mind-state healing happens quickly, whereas if the mind-state is negative, healing may be prolonged.

 What Is Vagal Tone?

Most of us don’t even know we have a Vagus that needs toning, but we most certainly do. Even the Vagus nerve, the largest cranial nerve within the body, starts through the entire human body at the base of their skull and melts, influencing the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. Frequently regarded our air traffic controller, the Vagus nerve will help regulate our primary bodily purposes. Our breath, digestion, and heartbeat, as well as our ability to take, process, and feel of our experience, are directly related to the Vagus nerve.

We understand when the Vagus nerve functioning because it can be felt by us about distinct levels and is toned:

Our digestion improves, our heart works optimally, and our moods stabilize. We have an easier time moving from the more active and often stressful states of being to the more relaxed ones. As we get better at doing that, we can manage life’s challenges with the right blend of energy, engagement, and ease. When we can consistently maintain this flexible state, we are thought to have “high vagal tone”.

“Low vagal tone”, on the other hand, brings with it a sense of depletion. Our digestion becomes sluggish; our heart rate increases and our moods become more unpredictable and challenging to manage. Perhaps not surprisingly, low vagal tone is connected with such health issues as melancholy, post-traumatic stress disease, chronic pain, and epilepsy–not coincidentally, the same conditions that reveal significant progress with yoga practice.

Researchers concluded that it is vagal stimulation through yoga that improves these conditions.

Yoga Chikitsa encourages interdependence among humans and intra- dependency within their systems, thereby creating and maintaining health at the physical, mental, and emotional levels.
